Casino shell under way without gaming licence

LINKS between the Government and the company running the Millennium Dome came under fresh scrutiny yesterday after it emerged that building work has already begun on a supercasino even though a gambling licence has not been granted.

  • Many casinos in Nevada were financed by mobsters. Most notable perhaps was Las Vegas' Flamingo which was opened in 1947 by Bugsy Siegel.
  • Charles Fey invented the first slot machine way back in 1895. He went on to perfect his initial innovation in 1907, when he teamed with Mills Novelty Company who manufactured the "Mills Liberty Bell".

  • 1926: Las Vegas gets a regular air service. Western Air Express flies between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. The airfield later becomes the site for the famous Sahara and Hilton hotels.
    1931: Gambling is legalized in Nevada on March 19. Construction begins on the long awaited Hoover Dam.
