Republican lawmakers skeptical of Topinka casino proposal
SPRINGFIELD — Republican Judy Baar Topinkas support of opening a casino in Chicago is not sitting well with some members of her own party. The GOP gubernatorial candidates plan, unveiled Wednesday, goes against long-held Republican opposition to the expansion of gambling in Illinois.

Interesting gambling facts:
- Massachusetts decriminalized bingo in 1931 in an attempt to help churches and charitable organizations raise money. Bingo was legal in 11 states by the 1950s, usually only for charity purposes.
- Blackjack originated in French casinos around the 1700's where it was called "vingt-et-un" (twenty-and-one) and has been in United States since the 1800's.
- The second oldest casino hotel resort on the Las Vegas Strip was the Last Frontier and it opened in October of 1942. It had 105 guestrooms and the property was made to look like an old western town. The first casino hotel resort opened just 18 months earlier and was called El Rancho.
- The first airplane flight to Las Vegas was made in May, 1920, with Lieutenant Randall Henderson, editor of the Blythe, California Herald, and Jack Beckley.
