Datebook Special Events

BINGO: Longwood Manor, 2760 Maytown Road, Maytown, will host its annual basket bingo at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in the main dining room. Tickets, sold at the door, are $20. Refreshments will be provided for a small fee. All proceeds benefit the local ambulance and fire company.

Casino gambling information:

  • During the 1950s, the Senate Committee to Investigate Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce held a number of hearings on criminal influence in the casino industry. The committee was chaired by Senator Estes Kefauver, and the committee is also known by his name.
  • Massachusetts decriminalized bingo in 1931 in an attempt to help churches and charitable organizations raise money. Bingo was legal in 11 states by the 1950s, usually only for charity purposes.
  • As early as 1420, lotteries were used in Europe for public works. High-value commodities such as land and art were often sold through lotteries.
  • 1905: The town of Las Vegas is founded when the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad Company holds a land auction at the site on May 15.
