Authorities nab leader of online-gambling firm
NEW YORK The chairman of British online-gambling company Sportingbet PLC is being held in New York on a fugitive warrant, two months after the chief executive of BetOnSports PLC was arrested in Texas on racketeering charges.

- In 1978, New Jersey became the second state to legalize casino gambling in an attempt to revitalize the rundown resort area of Atlantic City. The legalization was restricted only to Atlantic City.
- In 1911 US legislation prohibited stud poker but ruled that draw poker was a game of skill and therefore was not illegal.
- The first recorded betting games were played with marked disks or bones (the forerunners of dice), and spinning wheels or shields.
- 1993: Steve Wynn buys the Dune Hotel, then implodes it to make way for the Bellagio. The new MGM Grand is completed, once again becoming the world's largest hotel. On December 31, Barbra Streisand stars in the inaugural concert at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
