Nevada Casinos’ Win Totals Show Slight Gain
(AP) — Nevada casinos had a record win for October, nearly one-point-one (b) billion dollars. But a slump for Las Vegas Strip properties pulled down the statewide gain to a slight 0.4 percent increase over the same month a year earlier.

Gambling history facts:
- Many casinos in Nevada were financed by mobsters. Most notable perhaps was Las Vegas' Flamingo which was opened in 1947 by Bugsy Siegel.
- Although baccara has its origins in medieval Italy, it soon spread to France, where it was called "chemin de fer" (meaning railway, due to the action of the card box or shoe passing around the table on "tracks").
- In 1911, the state of California ruled that "draw" poker was a skill, and thus could not be banned under existing anti-gambling laws. However, "Stud" poker was still considered illegal at the time.
- French mathematicians Pierre de Fermat and Blaise Pascal explored the mathematics of gambling, leading to the formulation of Pascal's theory of probability in 1654.
