Virginia Indian tribes fight for federal recognition

Virginia’s Indian tribes are recognized as sovereign nations by Virginia, but not the federal government. That could soon change though. A House committee has passed a bill allowing recognition- only if the tribes forgo their right to run casinos on tribal lands.

  • Indian tribes have used their position as sovereign entities to develop a number of gaming establishments. Indian casinos operate in 22 states. This number is expected to grow.
  • 1926: Las Vegas gets a regular air service. Western Air Express flies between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. The airfield later becomes the site for the famous Sahara and Hilton hotels.
    1931: Gambling is legalized in Nevada on March 19. Construction begins on the long awaited Hoover Dam.
  • One of the oldest casinos in Europe, at Baden Baden in Germany, was opened in 1748 by Edouard Benazet, who employed Parisian craftsmen to design the stylish rooms.
  • U.S. News and World Report did a comparison of crime rates in cities with gambling versus those that do not. The crime rates were significantly higher in the places that allowed gambling.
