NEW CASINO-HOTEL’S DETROIT DEBUT: GRAND, GLITZY OPENING
The new MGM Grand Detroit hotel and casino — the city’s first fully-functioning permanent gambling facility — had its opening-day rollout Tuesday with joyous officials, celebrities, famed chefs, a knock-your-socks-off gala, fireworks and a declaration from Michigan congressman John Conyers that “we’re competing with Las Vegas.”

- By the 1370s, playing cards had reached Europe in a form that is recognizable today, with a pack consisting of 52 cards with suits of swords, polo-sticks, cups and coins.
- The casino at Spa, a Belgian resort town noted for its mineral baths, was built by the Prince Bishop of the province of Liege in 1763.
- In Cuba, during the 1950's, the blackjack shoe was first introduced. The dealers in Cuba handled the cards really well and management thought that the dealers may be being a little too good to their friends. So, to curb their suspicions, management decided to use a "dealing box" which is currently known as a shoe.
- 1973: The MGM Grand opens on the Strip, becoming the world's largest hotel.
1989: One of Vegas's most extravag-ant hotels opens. Steve Wynn's Mirage resort features a man-made volcano and over 3,000 rooms. Siegfried and Roy sign a $57 million, five-year contract to provide entertainment at the hotel.
