FROM OUR READERS: Are casinos a winning gamble for the city?

Your Sept. 30 article “A gamble on casinos seems to be paying off” ignored the fact that casinos subtract from an economy. They do not add value, as a manufacturer does. Manufacturers create new wealth by adding to the value of raw materials by conversion to useful goods. Casinos only take wealth from the community.

  • The brand new resort, Wynn Las Vegas recently opened on the Las Vegas Strip. At a cost of approximately $2.7 billion, the Wynn Las Vegas features 2,700 guestrooms and suites, casino (table games, over 1900 slots/video poker machines, poker room with race and sports book), several restaurants, a night club, golf, a shopping esplanade and a show called Le Reve.
  • Dog racing (a race among greyhounds who chase after a mechanical rabbit) operates in 17 states. Jai-alai (a game similar to handball) is legal in just three: Connecticut, Florida, and Rhode Island.
  • In Paris, legislation prohibiting playing cards was passed in 1377, and in Italy, playing cards and dice were burned.
  • Although baccara has its origins in medieval Italy, it soon spread to France, where it was called "chemin de fer" (meaning railway, due to the action of the card box or shoe passing around the table on "tracks").
