Turmoil in A.C. won’t stop casino investment
ATLANTIC CITY — Within 30 minutes of each other, two major events took place in this seaside gambling resort last week: MGM Grand Inc. announced plans for a $5 billion mega-casino-hotel, and the city’s mayor resigned, citing an over-reliance on pain pills and a federal probe into his Vietnam War service.

Gambling casinos history:
- In 1978, New Jersey became the second state to legalize casino gambling in an attempt to revitalize the rundown resort area of Atlantic City. The legalization was restricted only to Atlantic City.
- French mathematicians Pierre de Fermat and Blaise Pascal explored the mathematics of gambling, leading to the formulation of Pascal's theory of probability in 1654.
- In Paris, legislation prohibiting playing cards was passed in 1377, and in Italy, playing cards and dice were burned.
- Dog racing (a race among greyhounds who chase after a mechanical rabbit) operates in 17 states. Jai-alai (a game similar to handball) is legal in just three: Connecticut, Florida, and Rhode Island.
