Iowa panel to mull casino requests
DES MOINES (AP) â A state panel will meet Thursday to consider adding to Iowaâs 20 casinos in a decision that could determine the fate of a proposed Jasper County casino.

Gambling history facts:
- In 1973, the Commission on the Review of National Policy toward Gambling was created to study gambling in the United States.
- Many casinos in Nevada were financed by mobsters. Most notable perhaps was Las Vegas' Flamingo which was opened in 1947 by Bugsy Siegel.
- In 1911 US legislation prohibited stud poker but ruled that draw poker was a game of skill and therefore was not illegal.
- 1926: Las Vegas gets a regular air service. Western Air Express flies between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. The airfield later becomes the site for the famous Sahara and Hilton hotels.
1931: Gambling is legalized in Nevada on March 19. Construction begins on the long awaited Hoover Dam.
