July tax collections see jump as new casino comes on board
July reports show an increase over July 2007, but with two months left in the fiscal year, revenue-based taxes paid to the city, county and public schools by Vicksburg’s four casinos continued to lag 2007 figures slightly - the first revenue downturn since dockside gambling began here in 1993.

Do you know that:
- Massachusetts decriminalized bingo in 1931 in an attempt to help churches and charitable organizations raise money. Bingo was legal in 11 states by the 1950s, usually only for charity purposes.
- 1926: Las Vegas gets a regular air service. Western Air Express flies between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. The airfield later becomes the site for the famous Sahara and Hilton hotels.
1931: Gambling is legalized in Nevada on March 19. - In 1911, the state of California ruled that "draw" poker was a skill, and thus could not be banned under existing anti-gambling laws. However, "Stud" poker was still considered illegal at the time.
