$1B casino among largest in region

Neo Gold Wings Paradise’s estimated $1 billion casino hotel and resort project on Tinian broke ground yesterday, with Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, NGP chair Hyun Myung and other dignitaries touting it as among the largest attractions in the region.

Interesting gambling information:

  • Many casinos in Nevada were financed by mobsters. Most notable perhaps was Las Vegas' Flamingo which was opened in 1947 by Bugsy Siegel.
  • In 1911 US legislation prohibited stud poker but ruled that draw poker was a game of skill and therefore was not illegal.
  • U.S. News and World Report did a comparison of crime rates in cities with gambling versus those that do not. The crime rates were significantly higher in the places that allowed gambling.
  • In Cuba, during the 1950's, the blackjack shoe was first introduced. The dealers in Cuba handled the cards really well and management thought that the dealers may be being a little too good to their friends. So, to curb their suspicions, management decided to use a "dealing box" which is currently known as a shoe.
